You need permission first
Before you import anyone, make sure each person has agreed to receive text messages from you. You must confirm this before every import. Sending unsolicited texts violates United States law and will end your MojoTxt account without a refund.
Prepare your file
- Put your list in a spreadsheet with one person on each row. Each row needs a mobile number. It can also have first and last names, email, street address, city, state and zip.
- Save it as a CSV file. In Excel, use File, then Save As. In Numbers, use File, then Export To, then CSV. Tab-separated .tsv and .txt files also work.
You can import up to 5,000 rows at a time. For a bigger file, split it, or email us about a large import.
Start the import
Choose one of these:
- Into one list: click Subscription Lists, open the list, go to the Members tab, click Import, and choose Import a CSV file…
- Into your number: click People, then Import. You can choose a list and tags near the end.
Follow the steps on screen
- Upload: choose your file and check both boxes to confirm you have permission. Click Next.
- First row: if the first row holds headings like "Phone Number", choose Column names. If it holds a person's information, choose Subscriber data.
- Match columns: match each column to a field. Mobile Number is required. Any column you do not match is ignored.
- Preview: check the first rows and the counts of Valid rows and Invalid rows. If you started from People, you can choose a list and tags here.
- Click the button that says Import and the number of people. Stay on the page until you see Import complete.
The results show how many people were added, how many already existed, and how many were skipped. People who have opted out are never added back to a list, and rows with an invalid mobile number are skipped.
If all your data shows up on one line, open the file in Excel, check that each person is on their own row, save it again as CSV, and start over.
Importing does not send a welcome message
Imported people get no text when you import them. Your next message may be the first they hear from this number, so make it clear. Put your organization's name in the message and tell them how to stop, such as "Reply STOP to opt out." This lowers the chance they report your message as spam.
To copy people from another keyword instead, use Import from a keyword… in the same Import menu on the list's Members tab.
